There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino gambling is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, contains one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the normal table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel building that features a number of comforts on top of the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
