There is an appealing story to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge casino, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that highlights numerous luxuries in addition to the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
