There is an interesting story to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gambling is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, highlights 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that highlights numerous amenities in addition to the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 tables.
