There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino gambling is not allowed. Eight casinos are situated in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, features 150 slots and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that features numerous luxuries in addition to the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
